Abstract

This research explores the pivotal role played by the southern Algerian tribes—particularly the Chaanba tribe in the Metlili regionin the uprising of the Ouled Sidi Cheikh during the second half of the nineteenth century,The study aims to shed light on the political, social, and military dimensions of the revolt, with a specific focus on the contribution of southern tribes in resisting French colonial expansion in the Sahara. The dissertation adopts a historical-analytical approach, drawing on French archival sources, local documents, and modern academic studies, in order to highlight the strategic importance of the southern region within the broader context of popular resistance. The findings reveal that the Chaanba tribe, due to its advantageous geographical location and experience in desert warfare, played a central role in supporting the Ouled Sidi Cheikh uprising, serving as both a strategic base and a launching point for military operations and movements. The study also uncovers the deep tribal and religious ties between the Chaanba and the Ouled Sidi Cheikh, which contributed to the strengthening of tribal unity in the face of French colonialism. The dissertation concludes that the Ouled Sidi Cheikh uprising was not merely a local rebellion, but rather an integral part of the national resistance movement—one in which the southern region played a significant role, despite the marginalization it has suffered in conventional historical narratives.
