Abstract

Charles de Gaulle's memoirs from 1958 to 1962 reveal a radical shift in his stance on the Algerian question, from maintaining "French Algeria" to granting it the right to self-determination. Initially, de Gaulle, through the Constantine Plan, sought to economically and socially integrate Algeria with France, relying on military force. However, realizing the impossibility of a military solution and facing fierce resistance from the National Liberation Front (FLN), he began seriously considering the idea of self-determination. De Gaulle faced fierce internal opposition from the army and French settlers, culminating in coup attempts. Yet, with political courage, he pressed ahead with negotiations with the FLN, overcoming all challenges. These negotiations culminated in the historic Évian Accords of 1962, which paved the way for Algeria's independence. His memoirs highlight the complexity of his decisions and his keen foresight that France's supreme interest lay in ending this bloody conflict, even if it meant abandoning Algeria. De Gaulle balanced Algerian national aspirations with Frenchinterests, demonstrating decisive political pragmatism.
