Abstract
General Charles de Gaulle’s visits to Algeria occurred at a critical juncture in the
War of Liberation, when France sought to circumvent the national demands of the
Algerian people by advancing a series of political and reformist initiatives, such as
the Constantine Plan and the project of an “Algerian Algeria.” The National
Liberation Front (FLN), however, responded to these visits with a resolute and
unified stance, asserting that de Gaulle’s initiatives amounted to little more than
attempts to prolong colonial domination and manipulate both Algerian and
international public opinion. In official statements and public declarations, the
FLN unequivocally rejected via the newspaper "El Moudjahid" any form of
compromise or piecemeal reform that failed to meet the fundamental aspiration of
the Algerian people: full independence and complete sovereignty. The movement
stressed that the revolution had not been launched in pursuit of superficial reforms
or limited concessions, but rather for genuine liberation. This uncompromising
position not only consolidated the FLN’s legitimacy as the sole representative of
the Algerian people but also reinforced the spirit of resistance within Algerian
society, thereby frustrating de Gaulle’s efforts to fracture national unity.
