Abstract

The Swiss Confederation played a neutral mediating role between the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic and the French government during the independence negotiations (1960–1961). Switzerland, especially through its diplomats in Lausanne and Lucerne, provided a secure and discreet setting for initial talks. Swiss neutrality and the humanitarian stance of certain officials gained the trust of both sides. This mediation paved the way for the 1962 Évian Accords, which ended the war and recognized Algerian independence. The Swiss role remains a key example of effective quiet diplomacy.
